* Pretest required before start of class
· Please be prepared for your swim test. You will be required to complete the following prerequisites to continue in the Red Cross Lifeguarding course:
o Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order:
§ 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick
§ 100 yards of breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence
§ 100 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke
o Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve 10 pound object, return to surface, swim 20 yards to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
*To qualify for the Lifeguard (LG) Challenge, you need to have taken your LG class within the last 3-4 years. If your LG card has been expired for more than 12 months, you will not be eligible for a challenge and instead will need to retake the whole class. The LG program was updated in 2007 so you need to make sure you bring the updated book with you to class. Contact your local Red Cross to pick up a new copy if you only have the outdated 2002 version.
