Family Caregiving

Contact the Chapter

More than 22 million American families are caring for a parent, spouse, friend or other loved one at home, and as America’s population ages, the number of family caregiving situations is certain to increase. If your family is part of this growing trend, you know that ensuring a safe environment and providing even the most basic care can be overwhelming, and resources can sometimes be few. To meet the demand for affordable, high-quality training, the Red Cross has developed an outstanding Family Caregiving presentation course - including user-friendly booklets, an informative and detailed video presentation, and a leader’s guide. The modular design – each module is about one hour in length – allows for flexibility in customizing the program to meet the specific needs of groups.

Topics include:
  • Assisting with Personal Care
  • Positioning and Helping Your Loved One Move
  • General Caregiving Skills
  • Home Safety
  • Healthy Eating
  • Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia
  • Caring for a Loved One with HIV/AIDS
  • Legal and Financial Issues
  • Caring for the Caregiver
If you are interested in receiving more information about the Family Caregiving program, including prices and availability, or have an interest in becoming a Program Leader, please contact Ruthanne Weighton.

Contact the Chapter

This 16-hour course provides the basic knowledge and skills to enable participants to make decisions about emergency care in wilderness settings, including how to respond to delayed help situations, causes and prevention of injuries in wilderness settings, care of injuries for extended periods of time (while waiting for rescuers), and simple evacuation and short distance transfer techniques. The techniques in this course are not intended to replace advanced medical treatment, but to extend basic first aid to provide care until more advanced help can be reached. There are no pre-requisites for this course, although a CPR course is highly recommended additional training. A minimum age of 15 is also highly recommended, due to the serious nature of the course content. If you have a group that is interested in taking this class, please contact the chapter to schedule a training time.
